Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter is 4yrs old and when she suffers alot with a chesty cough which leads to sickness especially on a evening, could she be asthmatic?
Dear Cassiah-lily: Typically asthma symptoms include wheezing, difficulty breathing , dry cough and cough at night or in the presence of allergens like dust, mites, smoke, pollution, pets etc. Thus she could have asthma however below the age of 5 the condition is known as Reactive airway disease. You could ask your physician if she would benefit from a trial with bronchodilators which would help us make the diagnosis. Also there are other tests that can be done to exactly see whether she has asthma like a pulmonary function test. All the best. |
