Dear Ask The Doctor: My son has had a horrible cough for 7 weeks our doctors keep sayin nothing we can do but gave him inhalers but they are not helping it is affecting his school work and even the teacher thinks something should be done, its like a very loud barking cough ive tried calpol and childrens meds but nothing is helping please can you help?
Dear Charlene: It seems that your son may be having asthma or reactive airway disease if the inhalers are helping. If he indeed has asthma and the inhalers have not worked optimally then we could also add a tablet called singulair for the symptoms. Talk to you physician about the same. However if it is a barking cough then we may be dealing with an infection.Since it has been present since 7 weeks that is concerning and I would advice you to get a chest xray done so that we can rule out/in a potential pneumonia. Also you could ask your physician to start him on emperic antibiotics which may help cure the infection if one is present.Cough supppresants should not be used in children under the age of 5. All the best. |
