Dear Ask The Doctor: I am taking my 3 year old daughter on a trip and we will fly there, she has had issues with her ears in the past, is there anything i can do to try to make her as comfortable as possible? She has never been on a plane so I'm not sure if she will have problems or not, i just want to take the proper precautions, just in case.
Dear Amiyah: If your daughter has an active ear infection then you should postpone your trip. Flying with an ear infection can result in severe pain and even permanent damage to the ear. The changes in cabin pressure with ascending and descending may cause her some discomfort. Chewing gum or frequent swallowing may help to relieve this discomfort. However, there are no guarantees that these measures will work. |
