Dear Ask The Doctor: This question is about my daughter, age 15, chronic illness. Has had bouts with skin rashes and from birth, with fevers of 101 to 105, that were only dealt with at the ER with ice baths. Diagnosed with asthma after a bout with viral pneumonia when she was 2 and a half years old. Projectile vomited for many years, until was placed on albuterol treatments. Skin rashes that now last years which include, and has been topical steroid dependent for 13 years. Experiences hair loss, especially when she gets small puss pockets that form under the hair line. Took a long time to grow, finally reaching a spurt when she turned 14, but had to be placed in braces for almost 4 years because her teeth just would not come out.Now has a BMD t-score of negative 2.1 Her IgE is elevated. She seems more hyper when she is sick then when she is well. In fact, that is the biggest indicator that she is sick. For instance, she just caught strep-throat and she did not have the signs. We took her in because her brother was sick and had been exposed and she was the one that reacted. She had her tonsils removed, adenoidectomy and turbinate reduction, but her sinuses are still clogged. She coughs a lot and then sneezes in guts that are very harsh. She can not smell. She has sensory deprivation so she is unable to explain her pain, so it is always difficult. She has headaches. Her food allergies are corn, walnuts, peanuts, soy, sesame, wheat, and shrimp. Pet allergic and environmental and food allergic. She was eating well when the BMD was assessed and now we have to take her off all these foods and we are scared she won't get enough nutrition. What can we do?
Dear Angela: I do understand yoru worry and concern. Your daughter has a lot of different conditions going on at the same time unfortunately. Since she is allergic to the foods mentioned i would advice not to give the same to her. She can easily sustain positively on all other types of food. The best advice that i can give you right now citing this complicated case is that you need to find a long term process physician who she can be followed up with. I hope this helps |
