Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi i think my 3 year old daughter is developing chicken pox, she had a wee fever last tuesday, kept her off nursery the following day, was well again by the thursday,on the sunday just past we noticed a couple of wee spots developing on her back though no blisters, since then she has developed a few more but nothing too significant and again no blisters, as yet, we are this weekend going on holiday abroad and wondered if she is safe to travel by plane, have read that she is contagious till the last spot crusts, is this true and how long will it take for all the spots to develope? hope you can help. Tula.
Dear Tula: From what you have explained it does not seem that your daughter is having an attack of chicken pox. Typically for chicken pox there will be a multitude of rashes in different stages of formation and this usually is a maculopapulovesicular rash. The patient is usually sick for 2-3 days before the rash appears to about the time the rash crusts . Thus if she indeed has chicken pox then she may not only be contagious but also may be too sick to travel. Thus i advice you to refrain from travelling at this specific time. I hope this helps |
