Child health: too much melatonin

Dear Ask The Doctor: I frequently give my almost 11 year old son 2 mg of melatonin right before bed. He has ADHD and the Vyvance he takes to be focused during the day tends to keep him up late so the melatonin has been very helpful. I accidently gave him 4 mgs tonight rather than 2 mg. Is he at risk? He is already asleep.
Dear Willow: This should not be a problem. Melatonin toxicity can develop only in extremely high doses. You have given him double the prescribed amount however that is still very much within the normal range. I would advice you not to worry. |
