Dear Ask The Doctor: My 9 year old son began running a fever (102) on Sunday night. I have him tylenol and he went to bed. He woke up Monday and said he felt better. He went to camp for the day and I picked him up at 3:00. He came home and went to sleep . I checked on him to find his fever was up again. This continued on Tuesday and I took him to the doctor. Strep test was negative and was told it was a fever virus. My concern is that it is now Thursday night and he is continuing to run fever each afternoon adn night. Dear John David: Symptoms of viral infection may last anywhere from 7 to 10 days even with medications. Fever may go away on its own, once the viral infection is gone. However, fever medication needs to be continued to keep the temperature in control and to prevent any complication.
