Dear Ask The Doctor: What is the treatment for meconium plug associated with small left colon ,cystic fibrosis and hirschpring disease? Book says the treatment for meconium ileus is gastrograffin Is it the same for meconium plug also?please answer
Dear Basava: Meconium plug occurs in infants when there is immaturity in the functioning of the colon and small intestine, thus leading to delayed passage of first stool more than 24-48 hours after birth and dilation of the colon ie the large intestine. The meconium thus gets stuck and forms a plug. Meconium ileus occurs due to decreased contraction and movement of the intestine. However both are treated in the same way ie the gastrogaffin or barium . However it is important to note that meconium ileus usually is an underlying symptom for serious diseases like cystic fibrosis. I hope this helps. |
