Five- year old child with multiple symptoms: What could it be?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My now 5-year old son has been experiencing various health issues with what seems to be unrelated symptoms since November 2010. Back in November, he started experiencing very strong stomach pain, he'd loose all color in his face, and throw up. He then developed joint swelling and minimal red spots in his lower body. After numerous tests (blood, x-rays, ultrasound, scopes) he was diagnosed with HSP. He began feeling better by mid-January. Yet from 3 weeks ago, he's been experiencing new symptoms: He's been complaining of stomach pain, he's thrown up a few times, complains of heart pain (which seems like heart burn because it goes away after he takes children's pepto bismol), and he's know bruising very easily. I have no idea what this could be. Help!
Dear Marcelina: We could be dealing with some form of blood disorder considering the easy bruising. I would also like to rule out any sickle cell disease which is characterised by sickle crisis which lead to stomach and chest pains. You need to get him to a pediatrician and get various blood work and investigations done before we have a firm diagnosis. I hope this helps. All the best. |
