Dear Ask The Doctor: My granddaughter just turned 3. She gets high random fevers. Tonight her mother took her into the ER with a temp of 106.3, the motrin finally kicked in and brought it down to 100.3 but this has been happening to her since she was born and consistantly arises every 3-4 months and doctors can find nothing wrong with her. There are 2 other Mothers that I know of that are also having this issue and yet no one can seem to find out what the problem is. Then the doctors will give her a blanket antipiodic which only adds to the prbolem and gives her diarhea. As soon as the motrin wears off the temp goes back up. Help us please.
It is common for toddlers to have fevers. Viral infections are very common and can mount a fever easily especially in toddlers. Even a common cold can cause high fever in toddlers. Viruses may stay in the body for awhile and cause fever at it but as soon as it runs its course, the fever episodes will resolve. Bacterial infections may also easily set in in the setting of viral infection because the immune system will be less resistant, hence easier for bacterial infections to develop. This is probably the reason why she is being given antibiotics sometimes. If antibiotics make her stools soft, yogurt may help with this. Motrin relieves fever but make sure the dose her mother is giving her is the right dose. Some kids are heavy for their age; it will be longer for antipyretics (Motrin) to take effect if the dose is not enough. You have not mentioned if your granddaughter is in a day-care facility but most kids can also get infections easily when in day-care facilities as they mingle with other kids too. I do hope this helps and take care always. |
