Severe hair loss in five year old: What can cause this?

Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter is 5 years old. Hair has been consistently falling out for almost a year now, this month it seems worse than any other. Her over all health is good, her diet has changed slightly (no more red meat and pork) but that is just over the past four months. Her check ups are good and I am just worried that this is not a symptom of any underlying sickness. I don't understand why a childs hair would be falling out so severely at her age, when I try to maintain it as well as possible.
Dear Reesey: There are many causes of Alopecia ie hair loss. While there are some auntoimmune causes like alopecia aerata in your daughter case it may be due to dietary causes like lack of meat which can lead to decreased protein and iron levels and can consequently lead to hair loss. I would advice you to get her complete blood count checked and also schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to find out any other causes like alopecia aerata, fungal infection of the scalpĀ etc. I hope this helps. All the best. |
