Infantile Hypothermia and why it happens

Dear Ask The Doctor: My sister recently had a baby. Jacob is five days old and coming home. My concern is that my sister keeps her house almost freezing cold all the time during the summer. She also doesn't bundle Jacob up very much. I've heard of infants with hypothermia. What are the causes and what are the short or long term effects?
Dear Alexis: Children especially infants loose a lot of body heat through their skin. Moreover their thermal regulation control is not as developed thus they are more prone to developing hypothermia. It is advisable to wrap the baby up in a thin cloth so as to prevent this from happening. Hypothermia does not cause any significant long term effects but short term can lead to infant death if very severe. I hope this helps. |
