Dear Ask The Doctor: Is there a specific time and or specific symptoms that it is procedure to automatically do a spinal tap on a 2 week only infant? Dear Sarah: A spinal tap or a lumbar puncture as it is called in medical terms is usually done when there is some suspicion of a brain infection like meningitis /encephalitis etc. The spinal tap helps us evaluate the spinal fluid for infection and other cells.
