Dear Ask The Doctor: My daughter, 14, was bitten by a tiny kitten outside in a shopping center area yesterday. When she picked the kitten up, it then nipped her finger. I am so worried and wondered if she needed a rabies shot?? The bite did penetrate through the skin. Thanks!!" She did take an antibiotic, Septra.
It will depend on your geographic location if rabies is common or not. The WHO (World Health Organization) has general guidelines on rabies. Per WHO guidelines, since the bite has penetrated the skin, your daughter does need rabies shots. However, like I said, if your area has really low incidence of rabies, then it will be up to your doctor’s discretion to give her shots. If you want to have peace of mind, you can go see her doctor again and ask about the usual protocol of rabies in your area. I do hope this helps and take care always. |
