Dear Ask The Doctor: Currently taking 40 mg Lipitor and have for over ten years. For last few months have been experiencing leg and knee joint pain. Bothers me also at nite when sleeping. Am a 77 year old male and consider myself in good health.
Dear Frederick: Lipitor or atorvastatin is used to lower LDL cholesterol in patients with risk of cardiovascular diseases. Lipitor is one of the most potent of the statin medications and is highly effective at lowering LDL cholesterol. Common lipitor side effects includes myalgia, which tends to present itself as muscle pain and weakness, varying from mild to severe. Lipitor is also known to cause arthritis/arthralgias, diarrhea, headache, rashes, elevation of liver enzymes, various gastrointestinal symptoms including flatulence, dyspepsia, and abdominal pain. It is difficult for me to say whether your joint pain is caused due to lipitor or an underlying osteoarthritis. A detailed history and physical examination by your doctor may be helpful in the diagnosis of your problem. |
