Dear Ask The Doctor: Will eating alot, alot, alot of cheese make your cholestol and trigliserates go up to 800. and make your legs and feet swell up
Dear Don: According to the American Heart Association the desirable total cholesterol level is <200 mg/dL. Triglyceride is another form of fat and a triglyceride level of <150 mg/dL is normal. Excess dietary saturated fats and high alcohol intake can increase both cholesterol and triglyceride levels, however some people may intrinsically produce more cholesterol than others in the liver. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can also be secondary to an inherited disease of abnormal lipid metabolism. I would advise a trial of dietary and lifestyle modification for a 3 month period, then a repeat fasting lipid sample. If cholesterol and triglyceride levels remain high after this time period, medication may be indicated, to reduce your overall cardiovascular risk. |
