High Cholesterol?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I donated blood on October 25, 2010 and checking your cholesterol level is part of donating. My level was 176, I did some research and in some sites it said that this level is considered high and in others it was OK. Is my cholesterol considered high?

Dear Stephanie:

Let me reassure you that 176 mg/dl of Cholesterol is not considered high. In Fact, the level that you have is considered good and should not worry you.

On the other hand, levels between 200-240 mg/dl are considered borderline high and more than 240mg/dl are considered high and treatment should be started.
