High total cholesterol and triglyceride

Dear Ask The Doctor: My blood readings HDL 39 ,LDL 112 Total 205 Triiglyceride 272 I play tennis every day I eat oatmeal every day morning Still why mytrigyceride is hihig What else should I do To get healththy boold readings My age 55 Thanks

Dear Sathya:

The target level for your triglyceride is <200. Between 200 and 400 diet control and exercise is recommanded but if you have any risk factor for coronary artery disease( such as age >45, family history of premature coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, low HDL cholesterol <35mg/dl) than drugs can be started.

For dietry recommadation your daily cholesterol should be < 200mg/day, total fat should be < 25 to 35 % of total calories, saturated fat should be < 7% of total calories, carbohydrate 50 to 60 % of total calories and protein 15 % of total calories.

I would recommand you visit your GP and discuss with him if you are a candidtae for drug therapy
