Dear Barbara: Well you will need to have a strong determination and a daily routine in diet and exercise. First comes your diet, AVOID red meat like steak, bacon, ham, organ meats (such as liver), processed meats (such as hot dogs, sausage or bologna), fried foods, pre packaged foods, junk foods, whole milk, full-fat dairy products (such as cheese, ice cream or cream), candies and cakes. Use skimmed milk and yogurt. The best items are beans, unsaturated vegetable oils (such as safflower oil, olive oil or canola oil), fruits, citrus fruits, blueberries, garlic, grains, almonds, other nuts, soy, vegetables, whole grain bread, lean meat and skinless poultry. These things have antioxidants, vitamins and minerals as well as omega 3 acids that are known to reduce cholesterol levels in the body. High fiber foods, such as oatmeal, flaxseeds, and fiber supplements must be included in the diet because the fibres actually binds to the cholesterol and helps to clear it from the body. Exercise for atleast 30 to 40 minutes everyday. In order to stick to a routine, you can try doing an exercise or activity that you would enjoy, and follow it daily, like a walk or ride a bike or any aerobics. With the changes that you make in your diet and activity levels you would loose weight and feel healthy. Also remember that continuation of these healthy changes are of utmost importance for the desired results.
