Dear Ask The Doctor: I am female, 44 years old. My total cholesterol is 115, and HDL is 34. LDL is 64 and VLDL is 17. Is this OK or should I try to increase HDL? I have read several sources that say HDL for women should be at least 50. Is that true if LDL is low also?
Dear Michelle: HDL is high density lipoprotein which we consider as the good cholesterol. Basically what it does is that it transfers the cholesterol from the arteries into the liver so that it can be metabolised. The normal levels for HDL cholesterol is above 50-55 for women. The higher this level the less risk you are at to develop heart disease however this is keeping in mind a high ldl level too. Since your ldl level is also low ( which is good) your hdl seems appropriate. However you can try and increase your HDL levels. Eat more healthy and green vegetables and fruits. Also try and consume more nuts like walnuts, fish and white meat. All the best. |
