How long to wait before conceiving with Simvastatin?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am currently on cholesterol medication called Adco Simvastatin 40mg, I know that falling prengant whilst on this medication is bad for the foetus, but I want to know if i go off the medication how long will it take to work it's way out of my body and when can I start rying to have a baby? I have been on 20 mg since July 2010 and in in the last month I have been taking 40mg.

Dear Tracy: It may take upto 1 to 2 days for the elimination of the drug from the system, but the effects of the medication may take longer to wear off. You may want to speak with your doctor who prescribed the adco simvastatin, and let him/her know that you will be trying to conceive. He or she may want to address any underlying issues you may have (heart problems, etc.) before you get pregnant, and may advice you to slowly reduce the dosage of the drug and also about that, it may or may not be safe for you to get pregnant at this time.
