Cholesterol test and fasting

Dear Ask The Doctor: I recently had my cholesterol tested. I was told to fast 12 hours ahead of time, but by the time I finally got into the lab, a little over 15 hours had passed. I got my results back and I'm pleased (158.8 total), but I'm not sure if they're accurate. Should I schedule another test?
Dear Steve: Your results will be accurate as you are supposed to fast for atleast 12 hours before the test and no less. Since you were over that at 15 hours that is fine. You do not need to repeat the test. |
