Cholesterol levels and taking statins?

Dear Ask The Doctor: Do I need to go on statins if my total cholesterol is282, HDL 95, LDL 173, Trig 82. 47 year old female. 120 lbs, workout everyday, never smoke or drink, eat well

Dear Lori: From the information you have given me it is difficult for me to precisely say whether you need to go on medication or not since more information is needed as regards to your family history , the presence of other risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. However considering your lipid levels, I would advice you to try out a 3 month lifestyle modification method of treatment initially, This includes healthier diet containing more white meat, fish , freadh green vegetables and fibre. Increase your consumption of walnuts and fish oil. Also avoid red meat like lamb, beef etc. During your workout make sure you get more of cardio done for atleast 30 minds per day. If after these modifications your cholesterol level is still high then you will need to take statins. All the best.
