Taking Lipitor and Nordette together: is there an interaction?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am currently taking Lipitor 20mg for High Cholesterol. I also want to start taking Nordette birth control but I was wondering if these two drugs are ok to take together as I read somewhere that when you take Lipitor and Nordette together to hormone level is doubled. Is this true? Donna

Dear Donna: Both Lipitor and nordette are metabolised by the pathway in the liver and compete for the same metabolising enzyme. Thus it is true that taking these medications simultatenously may increase the levels of estrogen and progestin ( ie the hormones) in the body. You can still take the medications however I would advice you to take the meds at different times in the day. I hope this helps.
