What impact does CPK have on the body?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been taking Liptor for cholesterol management over a period of ten years. Recently I have been experiencing severe muscle aches and pains. I stopped taking Liptor for approximately 30 days prior to a visit to my MD. I informed him of my actions and he had some blood drawn and tests performed. My CPK level is cause for concern. It is over 400. I know that there are 3 types of CPK levels. How would I know which level is being reflected and how could this be lowered this level? What impact does CPK have on the body I thank you for your response and your time. Respectfully M. Mott
Dear Marc: CPK is an enzyme found mainly in the brain and lungs (CPK 1), heart (CPK 2), and skeletal muscle (CPK 3). When the total CPK level is very high, it usually means there has been injury or stress to the heart, brain, lungs or muscle tissue. CPK isoenzyme test needs to be done, to reveal the the exact source of the damaged tissue and specific type of CPK raised. The CPK enzyme is raised with tissue damage and may thus be lowered with treatment of its underlying cause.
