Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 39 years old male weighing 80kgs and 5feets 6inches tall. I have cholestrol which is 260 and Triglycerids 371.What medication and diet do i follow.I am a smoker and smoke 20 cigs a day
Dear Alam: First and foremost, I would strongly suggest for you to stop smoking. If you can try to at least cut down on smoking gradually and eventually stop it would be the best thing to do. Smoking remains one of the important risk factors for heart disease and stroke. I would also encourage you to exercise at least 30 minutes everyday. With regards to food, have more of green leafy vegetables because it will prevent absorption of cholesterol from the diet. Use canola oil, olive oil, eat more of peanuts, pecans, walnuts, avocado, salmon and mackerel. Avoid sweets, white bread and pasta because excess sugar in the body will be converted into fat. Lifestyle and dietary modifications are often ignored but very important; it plays an active role on lowering cholesterol levels. With regards to medications, I would suggest you see a doctor for that because they need prescription. Vitamin supplements with omega 3 can help lower cholesterol levels. Centrum Cardio is an example of a multivitamin supplement that helps lower cholesterol levels. I do hope I have answered your question and I wish you well always. |
