Kidney pain in CKD

Dear Ask The Doctor: I am a 44 year old male with a history of chronic hypertension, and have been diagnosed with ESRD my kidney function is 35% with a creatine of 3.8. I am having some pain on the right side rear of my back. It feels like its my kidney and on a scale of 1 to 10 the pain is about 7 and constant. I have no water retention and am just worried. What could be causing the pain in my back near my kidneys, and should go for treatment?

Dear Willie:

Kidney pain is not a common symptom in Chronic Kidney disease; however it might be caused by certain conditions such as the presence of a kidney stone, cyst or more commonly a renal infection.

I would definitely suggest you to consult your physician to rule out these conditions, he/she might need to evaluate you with more detail to rule out signs of inflammation or infection and probably ask for a urine culture. I wish you a prompt recovery.
