One kidney, pregnancy and renal failure |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm a 31 yr old female now 16wks pregnant with 2nd child. I had a Wilms' Tumor in my lt kidney as a baby it was removed and since have been healthy. I've been requesting that my Creatinine and Bun are monitored during my pregnancies. My recent labs have come back and my Cr was 1.2, Bun 14. I'm worried that I am in renal failure, am I? What procedures or tests can I expect my Dr to order? What are some questions I need to make sure are answered at my next visit? Also is it possible to have damaged my one kidney during labor- I had pushed for over 5 hrs. (Eventually having a c-section). Labs were elevated after pushing. Never went back for check ups but have had "kidney" pain since Dear Marie: I understand how worried you are about your pregnancy and solitary kidney. Let me reassure you that your tests results are normal so far, however since you have one kidney, special care might be needed. Follow up with your physician for monitoring of your Glucose levels and Blood pressure as well as your kidney function might be needed. Labor itself is unlikely to cause renal failure, however abnormal bleeding during or after birth as well as Pre eclampsia, Eclampsia might cause Acute Renal Failure.
