Dear Ask The Doctor: Hello, My grandpa is 71 years old, and has deitbetis and chronic kidney disease. My grandma wanted me to go onto the internet and find things that he could eat due to his CKD. There's a problem though; what i'm fidning that he can eat with the CKD, he can't eat because of the dietbetis. What I am trying to ask is that, what would my grandpa be able to eat with both of these diseases?
Dear Rachael: Key components of the diet include managing blood sugar through carbohydrate control and by decreasing sodium, potassium and protein intake. Avoid processed and packaged foods. Foods rich in fibre may reduce absorption of sugars and thereby provide a better blood glucose control. Other foods that may be preferred include pineapple, watermelon, cranberry juice, bell peppers, fresh broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, onions, corn, cucumber, green beans, kale, lettuce, fresh mushrooms etc. However best is to consult a dietitian for a diet plan that may be developed according to your grandpa’s level of sodium, potassium, phosphorus and protein levels as well as sugar control.
