Cold Sore Infection and Treatment

Dear Ask The Doctor: I woke up this morning and noticed I was getting a cold sore.. I took Valtrex right away and started to apply campho phenique.. then after a couple hours I was able to get abreva and have been applying that. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to pop the cold sores and if that would help them heal faster?

Cold sores are caused by herpes simplex type 1 virus and are destined to heal once the virus becomes inactive. There is no sure cure. Blisters is the infective stage of the virus and popping would could further spread the infection. Valtrex and Abreva is the right treatment and will help you control the symptoms and heal faster.
