Symptoms of colon cancer

Dear Ask The Doctor: Can bacterial infection, diarrhea, blood when I wipe and swelling of the colon be a sign of cancer?

Dear Diane:Any alteration in bowel habit, from your previous normal habit or the presence of blood in the bowel motion could be a sign of colon cancer. There is a hereditary component to colon cancer, therefore a family history is significant. If you have any of the above symptoms, or a positive family history, I would advise attending your family physician for a detailed history of your symptoms and clinical examination. He may refer you for further investigation including faecal occult blood testing, barium enema or colonoscopy to exclude colon cancer as a cause for your symptoms.
