How to Diagnose Colorectal Cancer

Dear Ask The Doctor: Dear. My name is charles. Im from south africa. I would like to know if it is possible to have stage 4 colorectal cancer if all my blood tests are normal?
Diagnosis of colon cancer usually requires colonoscopy and other imaging studies (CT scan, MRI or ultrasound) to detect the tumor. In some cases, a metastases (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) is identified incidentally and upon further investigation, the primary cancer will be found in the colon. Any metastases found anywhere in the body is considered stage 4 colorectal cancer. Blood tests are usually screening tests. May I ask if only blood tests were done? Were there any other procedures done too? You may ask your doctor about these things to help appease your concerns. As far as I know, blood tests coupled with imaging procedures, possibly biopsy, are needed to diagnose colorectal cancer. I hope this helps and I wish you well always. |
