Redundant colon, can it cause IBS?

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have just had a colonoscopy. The report says I have a redundant colon. Could this explain my irritable bowl syndrome? Could this be the reason I feel numbness in my left leg. Could the redundancy be putting pressure on my bladder making it necessary to uninate every two hours or less?

Dear Pam: Redundant colon is a normal anatomical variant of the colon with presence of extra colonic loops. It has typically has no direct major health consequences but may rarely cause volvulus and lead to intestinal obstruction. It is also known to cause constipation due to the increased length of the colon.  A redundant colon may not be able to explain your irritable bowel syndrome or the numbness of your leg.
