Dear Ask The Doctor: Whenever I poop I bleed out of my anus. Not alot of blood but its pretty painful. It doesnt matter the size of the bowel movement either. I just would like some advice or recomendations. Thanks
Dear Bradley: The presence of blood in stool and pain after passing stools could be a sign of underlying hemorrhoids or anal fissure. Chronic constipation is usually the cause of both hemorrhoid and anal fissure. Usually medical management with sitz bath and stool softeners to relieve the symptoms. If these measures do not help, intra-anal application of nitroglycerine rectal ointment may also be considered. Other treatments such as calcium channel blockers and localized injections of botulinum toxin have all been shown to provide some relief of symptoms and in some cases may cure the condition. If these do not relieve your symptoms, I would suggest that you see your doctor for an anoscopy. Treatment would then depend on whether the cause is hemorrhoid or anal fissure. Take care. |
