Severe Constipation

Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been constipated for years, and lately it is really bad. I have a full stomach and I feel way bloated. Every time I try to use the bathroom when I feel I have to, it seems like it just wont come out. I have been like this for years and this time its worse. Last I tried to use the rest room it was hard and painful and then there was blood. Should I see a doctor for help?

Dear Jared:

I would definitely suggest you to consult your physician, after such a long time being constipated certain complications such as Bleeding hemorrhoids might develop.

In the meantime, increase the fiber in your diet, drink lots of water and exercise daily. If you are living a sedentary life your bowels would not move also. I would suggest you to take Colace which can be bought over the counter and would help you temporarily but you should make an appointment with your physician for a more detailed evaluation. I wish you a prompt recovery.
