Bleeding When Having a Bowel Movement |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I am 21 year old female, i am a vegetarian, drink lots of fluid and eat loads of fibre. i regularly bleed a alot when i have a bowel movementi have tried senokot and movicol etc but nothing helps. what do you suggest it could be? Dear Shari: From your description it seems that you have irregular bowel movements that you have been taking care of using senokot, movicol, high fibre diet and increased fluid intake etc. It should be noted however that excessive use oflaxatives can have reverse effects on long term use, causing constipation rather than treating it. You should slowly reduce the dose of laxative you have been taking and then concentrate more on diet regulation and exercise. Take small frequent meals during the day which are rich in fibre, proteins, grains, fruits, vegetables along with lots of water. You should try to avoid fast foods, processed foods, sweets, candy and soda as much as possible. You may want to try having prune juice which is very effective for constipation. In the event that lifestyle and dietary changes along with the elimination of the laxatives does not help, and your bleeding continues, you should visit your doctor for further evaluation of the source of the bleeding.
