Dear Ask The Doctor: Is constipation and peristalsis the same thing?
Dear Vicki: Constipation is having a bowel movement fewer than three times per week, that are usually hard, dry and difficult to eliminate. Such bowel movement may be painful and often associated with straining, bloating, and the sensation of a full bowel. Peristalsis is a series of co ordinated muscle contractions that occur throughout the digestive tract, for the purpose of food, liquid or bowel movements along the digestive tract for digestion and absorption of foods and finally elimination of waste products from the body. It may be felt in the body with gas moving along and also with weird audible noises made by the peristaltic movements of gut at times.
