Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been constipated for practically 4 years now. I never have the urge to go and I have gone a month without a BM. When I do go, it is very hard and enormous and I have to strain to get it out. I have been having lots of lower back pain and abdomen pain for the past couple months and laxitives don't seem to work. What should I do? Go get a colonoscopy? Thanks so much
Dear Christina: There are various causes and treatments for constipation. In your case it seems that your stool bulk is less and the same is very hard and thus leads to the constipation that you are experiencing. At first you need to make some dietary modifications like increasing the amount of water and fibre in your diet . This includes fresh green leafy vegetables, bulk forming foods like wheat etc. Also you can take bulk forming laxatives like methylcellulose, metamucil, bran etc, Some stoold softners that you can use are lactulose, colace. I would also advice that you get a colonoscopy done to rule out any potential obstruction. All the best. |
