Dear Ask The Doctor: For the past couple of months I have had bright red blood in my stool. I don't have regular bowel movements (maybe every four days) and there is t much blood. But today I had a really long lasting painful movement and my stool was hard as rock, as well as there being more blood. is this anything serious? I'm a little embarrassed to go to my doctor, and I doubt I would be able to give them a sample since I don't go often.
Dear Chantelle: I do understand that it may be a little embarrassing to talk to your doctor about problems relating to bowel movements and stool. You have mentioned that you have infrequent bowel movements (every 4 days), hard stools and sometimes blood in stools. This is a common occurrence in people suffering from constipation.
The blood in stools may be the result of small tears in the mucosa due to the hard nature of stool or due to hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Modification in diet like increasing the fiber in food (green vegetables, fruits & grains), drinking plenty of water may help relieve the symptoms of constipation. If these do not help then you may have to consult your physician on the use of laxatives to relieve the constipation. |
