Coughing up white plaque like balls

Dear Ask The Doctor: I get a weird tickle in my throat that feels like something isfloating around. I am able to cough it up and it is like a white or sometimes brown ball of soft "plaque like" material. It also smells like bad breath. This has only happened a few times. The first time this happened I thought it was plaque that I had swallowed, but I know for sure that I did not . PWhat could this be? I would seek help, but do I go see my primary physician or so I go see a dentist?
Dear Vivian: What you are be experiencing may be due to expectoration of phlegm due to respiratory tract infection or a post nasal drip. You may use expectorants, mucolytics and steam inhalation to help remove the phlegm from the throat.
Since the color of your phlegm is white, this indicates that it is not infected. However, it is also wise to have yourself checked by a doctor just to make sure if you need antibiotics or not. |
