Dear Ask The Doctor: Thank you for your useful site. I cough a lot; without any serious reasone; from ten years ago. The cough start about half an hour after waking up but I don't cough when I am sleeping.I have not any problem in lung. The cough will stop after get adult cold or cold stop but it's temporary and will start after 2 weeks. My age is 50. What can I do for stop coughing?
Dear Fatemeh: Chronic cough that is present for more than 8 weeks is difficult to diagnose and treat. Your symptoms could be due to asthma, cigarette smoking, reflux disease, sinus problems and infections like bronchitis and pneumonia. Certain medications like ACE Inhibitors used in treating hypertension can also cause cough. The treatment of chronic cough is directed towards finding the cause of the cough and treating it. Over the counter drugs containing dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant), steam inhalation, cough lozenges and drinking lots of water will bring symptomatic relief. I would advice you to follow-up with your GP. A chest x-ray may be required for further evaluation and treatment. |
