Dear Ask The Doctor: The week after Christmas I came down with a cold and the symptoms went away except for my cough. I have a deep loud cough that sometimes produces muscus. I have tried several remedies for it such as dayquil, nyquil, advile congestion, delsym, robitussion cough and congestion, vapor rubs, my nebulizer, vitamins, teas, and it just will not go away. It seems to be especially bad when I get hot or when I try to relax my body to go to sleep at night. I was just wondering if there was another OTC medicine I could try before forcing myself to atually go to the doctor's office
Dear Cassie: I would definitely advise you to get your sputum checked along with a chest x-ray. From your history, it looks like a respiratory tract infection or acute bronchitis. Your symptoms may also be due to your asthma along with a secondary infection. In case of an underlying infection, antibiotics and bronchodilators are recommended. I wish you well, take care. |
