Dear Ask The Doctor: I'm 13 years old and have had a cold, sore throat and cough all week. The coughing is mainly affecting me now and this morning I coughed up blood. This has happened twice so far and I was wondering if anyone knew a cure, what the cause of this is or what I should do? Thank you
Dear Lydia:
Hemoptysis (coughing out blood) has a number of causes, which can range from minor illnesses (e.g. Acute Bronchitis) to serious ones (e.g. Pneumonia, Tuberculosis). In your case, it is possible that your airways were irritated by frequent coughing and has been ``wounded``, hence blood was coughed out. Usually, if it is only a minor irritation, the bleeding will stop on its own. I strongly suggest you see your physician so as the cause of your hemoptysis will be treated and attended to. |
