Dear Ask The Doctor: I have been coughing for over a week now and i am bringing up phlegm when i am coughing at the present time i cant seem to keep my food down due to these coughing fits that i am having too i dont have any other symptoms of cold or flu along with this cough that i have and i would like to know what or how i can treat this cough that i have thanks
There are a number of causes for irritating cough. A common one is postnasal drip (wherein the phlegm from the sinuses drops to the throat) which can be itchy and bothersome. Another is an upper respiratory tract infection. The color of the phlegm is also very important. Yellowish and/or greenish phlegm can signify bacterial infection and may entail antibiotic treatment. You may take over-the-counter antitussives to suppress the cough. Hydration is also very important so drinking at least 2 liters of water a day can be helpful. Vitamin C and citrus fruits can help loosen phlegm hence coughing it out easier. However, it is also wise to have yourself checked by a doctor just to make sure if you need antibiotics or not. It is always better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps. |
