Dear Ask The Doctor: My name is heather. And my question and concern is... i am twenty for years old and weigh about 240lbs. I have not always had a easy life and so i honestly am saying that i smoke methamphetamines(like three times a week), ciggarettes(like ten a day), and marijuana frequently daily. For the past four years or so i have had an annoying amount of coughing. There is not to much phlem that comes from it, its a dry non raspy after a while make my throat sore and have a heartbeat in it kind of thing. Not only that but it has come to my attention that when placing my hand apon my throat. That if I push alittle.i can feel a small popping. like its shifting. And sometimes when i eat food or drink anything after a few days it will hurt every time i swallow. I am so worried my lungs are going to collapse or that i might get some kind of cancer. Is this something i need to be worried about immediately and what can i do as far as getting the cough. Away besides quitting smoking because i started today? Plz Help!!!.. Although the most important step you can take is to quit smoking, you may drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated, steam inhalation to reduce the inflammation and cough drops or other liquid suppressants that contain dextromethorphan (available over the counter) may be helpful.
