Chronic Cough - Pertussis or Something else?? |
|
Dear Ask The Doctor: I went to my family Dr. on monday, and after no tests, just going off of what I told him, he diagnosed me with Pertussis. This is what I told my Doctor. I have had a constant cough since about February every morning when I wake up, and late at night when I'm getting ready for bed. I always feel like I have flem in my throat and it's impossible to get out, but my cough is a dry cough. He prescribed me with 250mg Z-Pak, and I don't really feel like it's helping. Tomorrow is the last day of my Z-Pak, and I honestly feel like I'm coughing more than I was before, but now its more of a wet cough. I'm just curious as to if he made a correct diagnosis, and if so, if my reaction to the medication is normal? Dear Victoria: In my opinion you may have a post nasal drip of the mucus which may be due to allergies irritating your throat and thereby producing a dry cough, more so when you are lying down at night rather than during the day. Also the antibiotic may not improve your cough for this reason. You may need to dry the mucus secretions caused by allergies with the use of a anti-histamines, decongestants or nasal steroid sprays to get relief from this cough.
