Dear Ask The Doctor: My 5 year old son has been coughing for about 6 weeks now i have taken him to his doctor and he has been no help... when he is very active it gets worse. there is asthma on my side of the family.. now when he coughs he starts to cry and says it hurts his chest.. what should i do Dear Teresa: In my opinion you need to take a second opinion from a pediatrician for your son’s chronic cough. From your description, it seems more likely that the cough is due to asthma. However confirm diagnosis can only be made after an expert examination of your son along with necessary investigations like Xray, spirometry etc. You can help by keeping your child away from tobacco smoke and other pollutants, such as smoke from a stove or fireplace. Also menthol rubs may be soothing for his lungs and help breathing.
