Dear Ask The Doctor: I have recently gotten a cold or flu not quiet sure which one, it gavve me a nasal congestion and dry cough. the nasall congestion has almost completely cleared up but the dry cough has maintained. The cough has increased in occurance and now when I cough it will be around a good 3 to 4 minutes before it lets up to the point I can breathe. I was just wondering if you could perhaps give me an idea of why this happens or what I can do to help stop this cough from continuing. thanks
Dear Michelle: Common causes of irritating cough are usually viral and allergic type of cough. If you are not coughing out yellowish phlegm, you can just increase fluid intake, take over-the-counter cough suppressants (Robitussin) and have more citrus fruits. Since you have allergic tendencies, make sure your pillows and sheets are clean, dust off tabletops and other areas in your room/house, etc. Allergic cough can persist as long as the triggers are there. If your cough would still persist even after doing all these, you should see a doctor as soon as possible so you can be completely examined and evaluated. I do hope I have answered your question and take care always. |
