Dear Ask The Doctor: Hi, a few times a year I get a very strong persistent cough that can last 8 weeks or more. It is especially bad in the morning, in cold temperatures and after any kind of excerise even brisk walking - even laughing can set it off. I don't smoke or drink and am otherwise in good health but it is very irritating and my ribs have become painful with the strain - should I see my GP or is it nothing to worry about, as previously they have never carried out any tests and just prescribed antibiotics?
Dear Jade: You have mentioned that you get a persistent cough a few times a year which is usually brought on by cold and exercise, these symptoms are suggestive of an allergic component to your cough. I would suggest you visit an allergist to see if you are allergic to anything. Also I would advise on visiting your doctor for a physical examination, chest x-ray and blood-work which may include complete blood count, eosinophil count and IgE levels. |
