Dear Ask The Doctor: Starting 3 days ago, I developed aches, chills, then a good fever (102 or 103) with bad headache. That evening diarrhea came on (15 times a day average so far), as did abdominal aches. Since then, the fever has come down as has the headache, but the diarrhea is as bad if not worse. I can't eat anything due to the aches and any liquid i put in my body i almost instant need to go have diarrhea. I haven't eaten in two days but have forced 10 to 12 cups of liquid in me each day. The diarrhea is just small amounts (there is nothing in my body) and not bloody as of yet. But my abdominal pains(aches hurt more than ever. Does this sound like a bacterial or viral infection or something else?
Dear Steve: I do understand your concern. Your diarrhea is most probably viral in origin and should subside in a day or two. If your diarrhea does not stop or reduce in frequency in 2 days, you should see a doctor for treatment and get a stool and blood test done. At this time, it is important for you to rehydrate yourself to replace the fluids lost from the body. |
